Separable and Inseparable Verbs 

The first syllable of the verb (prefix) decides whether a verb can be separated into two parts or not:
Separable - first syllable is stressed Inseparable - first syllable is unstressed
Always separable Separable when stressed Inseparable when unstressed Always inseparable
ab-, an-, auf-, aus-, ein-, fest-, her-,
hin-, los-, mit-, vor-, weg-, zu-, zurück-
dúrch-, ü′ber-, únter-, úm-, wíder-, wíeder- durch-, über-, unter-, um-, wider-, wieder- be-, emp-, ent-, er-, ge-, hinter-, miss-, ver-, zer-
Ich komme um 14 Uhr an. Ich komme um 14 Uhr wieder. Ich unterrichte Deutsch. Ich verstehe das nicht.
